🚀 One of India’s leading engineering institutions, BITS Pilani, has joined the Autoware Foundation!

BITS Pilani joins our ecosystem with a clear ambition: to accelerate real-world autonomous driving research within one of the most diverse and challenging mobility environments on the planet.

Their autonomous DTV test vehicle (by Whale Dynamic) will become an important platform for integrating, testing, and showcasing the Autoware Low-Speed Autonomy stack — directly contributing to our open-source roadmap.

They’ll also bring a strong pipeline of talented students and faculty who will co-develop features, explore autonomy concepts, and support next-generation innovation across our working groups.

📚 One especially exciting contribution: training and validating Autoware models on complex Indian driving data.

India’s unique mix of traffic behaviors, road conditions, vehicle types, and environmental patterns provides an irreplaceable setting for improving the robustness and generalizability of autonomous systems worldwide. Their team has already begun collecting and curating this dataset — a valuable asset for the entire community.

Looking ahead, BITS Pilani plans to explore comparisons between vision-first and LiDAR-centric autonomy architectures, adapting their platform to push research boundaries and evaluating what truly scales across different global regions.
